Seed & Ware Potatoes

Potato growing has long been a core part of our farming business, with our operations focused on producing high-quality processing, fresh and seed potatoes across Yorkshire. Our involvement in every stage of the growing process, from variety selection and trials through to storage and marketing, gives us a strong understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing modern potato production.

Today we grow 690 hectares of potatoes across North and East Yorkshire, producing processing potatoes for crisping, fresh potatoes for the packhouse, seed potatoes for internal multiplication and supply to our grower base, as well as multiplication crops on behalf of leading seed houses. Our production is strategically focused, with processing potatoes concentrated in the Vale of York, while the Yorkshire Wolds provides the ideal environment for fresh and seed potato production. The Yorkshire Wolds are characterised by free-draining, lime-rich soils over chalk and limestone — ideal conditions for growing high-quality seed and ware potatoes.

Investment in storage and handling infrastructure is a vital part of our operation. Potatoes are stored in both bulk and box facilities, enabling us to market quality produce from store throughout the season. All seed potatoes are stored and graded at Low Mowthorpe, ensuring consistency, traceability and the highest standards of quality control.

Innovation also plays an important role in our business. Through dedicated fresh and processing potato trials on representative soil types, we continually assess new varieties, fertiliser programmes and innovative growing techniques to ensure we remain at the forefront of efficient and sustainable potato production.
